Convert Word tables to Markdown

Standard Word tables can become editable Markdown tables. Because Markdown tables are simpler than Word tables, review the result when the original uses merged cells, nested tables or complex layout.

How a standard table maps

The converter reads the first row as the Markdown header, then writes the remaining rows as table data. A line break inside a cell is represented with
.

What Markdown tables can and cannot express

Regular rows and columnsConverted to a Markdown table
Line breaks inside a cellRepresented with
Merged cellsCannot be represented exactly; review the flagged table
Nested tables or complex layoutMay be simplified; compare with the source

Review a converted table

  1. Compare the number of columns

Check each row against the Word source. Confirm that values have not shifted into neighboring columns.

  2. Check the header row

The first row becomes the Markdown header. If your Word table has a title row or no real header, adjust the Markdown before publishing.

  3. Simplify merged layouts

For merged cells, consider splitting the table into smaller tables or moving explanatory text into a heading or paragraph.
