IMAGE WORKFLOW
Extract images from a Word document
The current converter turns document text into Markdown and leaves placeholders for embedded images. Use the original DOCX to move image files separately, then add links that match your Markdown destination.
Convert a DOCX fileExtract images without changing the original
Make a copy of the DOCX
Keep the original document unchanged so you can compare the extracted assets and Markdown output.
Open the copy as a ZIP archive
Rename the copied .docx file to .zip, then use your operating system archive tool to extract it.
Find the media files
Open the word/media folder in the extracted package. Preview the files and copy only the images you need into your project or vault.
Add Markdown image links
Use a path relative to the Markdown file. The destination app may have its own image embedding syntax.
Markdown image syntax
For a file stored in an assets folder next to your note, use a relative path like this:
For Obsidian and GitHub
- Obsidian also supports embeds such as ![[architecture.png]] when the image is in the vault.
- GitHub repository previews use paths relative to the Markdown file or repository.
- Confirm that each asset is committed or included in the folder you move.
What to expect from the converter
Image pixels and placement are not exported by the converter. The Markdown output uses an “Image not exported” placeholder so image locations are easier to spot during review.
