A QUICK WORKFLOW
How to Convert Markdown to Word in 3 Steps
This Markdown to Word converter turns text you provide into a downloadable .docx file. You do not need to upload a Markdown file, install a command-line tool, or create an account.
01
Paste or write your Markdown
Add Markdown in the editor above, or choose Try an example to see the supported syntax. Headings use hash marks, lists use ordinary Markdown markers, and tables use pipes and a separator row. The editor accepts text directly; it does not ask you to choose a file from your device.
02
Review the source and formatting
Check heading levels, table columns, code fences, and link addresses in your Markdown before exporting. The tool creates the Word document from the text in the editor, so make any corrections here first. For images or complex tables, read the notes below and plan a quick check in Word.
03
Download and check the DOCX
Select Download .docx and open the generated file in Microsoft Word or another DOCX-compatible editor. Confirm that page breaks, list indentation, links, and any content you plan to share look right in your target editor. The export is a starting document, not a reproduction of a custom Word template.
FORMAT REFERENCE

HONEST FORMAT LIMITS
Markdown to Word Limits: Images, Tables, and Styles
Markdown and Word are built for different jobs. Markdown keeps content portable and easy to edit, while Word supports page-level layout, templates, and richer document controls. This converter focuses on common text structure; it does not attempt to recreate every feature of a designed Word file.
Images stay as references
An image such as becomes text containing its alt text and URL. The image bytes are not downloaded or embedded. To include a picture in the final DOCX, download it separately and insert it in Word, then check its placement and accessibility description.
Use simple tables for the most predictable result
Basic pipe tables become Word tables with standard rows and columns. Markdown has no common syntax for merged cells, and nested table layouts are outside this converter’s supported format. If a table has a complicated header, merged areas, or another table inside a cell, simplify it into a flat table or keep that section as prose and finish its layout in Word.
Finish document-specific styling in Word
Heading levels map to the built-in Word heading styles, but the converter does not load a company template or create custom styles, footnotes, page numbers, or precise page layout. Footnote syntax, task-list checkboxes, mathematical notation, and raw HTML are not special-cased. Review those elements before relying on an exported document for publication or formal distribution.
A BETTER STARTING POINT
Prepare Markdown to Word for a Cleaner DOCX
A little structure in the source makes the exported Word file easier to navigate and revise. Before you download, use this short checklist for documents that will be shared with a team or edited further:
Build a clear outline. Use one top-level heading for the document title, then organize sections with progressively lower heading levels instead of formatting ordinary text to look like a title.
Keep paragraphs and lists distinct. Add blank lines between paragraphs, and put each list item on its own line so the converter can recognize the intended structure.
Simplify wide tables. Use the same number of cells in each row. If a table needs merged headers, nested sections, or precise column widths, finish it in Word instead.
Write descriptive link text. A label such as “Project brief” is easier to scan than a long pasted URL, and the URL remains available as the hyperlink destination.
Describe images in their alt text. The DOCX receives the description and URL rather than the image itself, so useful alt text helps explain what readers still need to insert manually.
MADE FOR A SIMPLE HANDOFF
When to Use This Markdown to Word Tool
Use the converter when your source is already Markdown and you need a familiar DOCX to review, share, or continue editing. It can help turn a README, release note, project brief, meeting summary, or technical draft into a Word document without changing editors first. It is also useful when a collaborator needs a DOCX copy but your working source lives in a Markdown repository or note-taking app.
The result is an editable DOCX, not a locked PDF and not a pixel-perfect clone of a custom template. If you need branded page furniture, precise pagination, embedded figures, or review comments, download the document and finish those details in Word. For the reverse task—turning a Word document into Markdown—use our Word to Markdown converter.
LOCAL BY DESIGN
Your Markdown Stays in This Browser
The DOCX is assembled on your device in the browser. The text from the editor is not sent to a conversion server, and the tool does not require an account. This makes it convenient for drafts and notes you prefer not to upload for conversion. As with any browser tool, use a trusted device and avoid sharing the downloaded document through a public link unless you intend it to be public.
QUICK ANSWERS
Markdown to Word Converter FAQ
What does this Markdown to Word converter create?
It creates a .docx Word document from Markdown you paste into the editor. It does not create the older .doc format.
Which Markdown formatting is carried into Word?
The export maps heading levels to Word heading styles, and supports paragraphs, basic lists, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline and fenced code, blockquotes, horizontal rules, links, and simple pipe tables.
Are Markdown images embedded in the DOCX?
No. Image Markdown is exported as its alt text and URL, not as an embedded image. Download the image separately and add it to the Word document if you need it displayed inline.
Can it convert merged or nested tables?
The converter supports simple pipe tables with ordinary rows and columns. Markdown does not provide a standard way to represent merged cells, and nested tables are not supported; simplify the table or keep that section in Word.
Does my Markdown get uploaded?
No. The document is generated locally in your browser. The Markdown text is not sent to a conversion server by this tool.
Does the export support footnotes or custom Word styles?
No. The converter uses a consistent set of built-in Word styles. Footnotes, custom page layouts, and custom Word style definitions are not generated.
Is the Markdown to Word converter free to use?
Yes. You can use the browser-based converter without creating an account or paying for the export.
