Move Word documents to Obsidian

Convert a modern Word document to an editable Markdown file, then review its structure before adding it to your vault. Conversion runs locally in your browser; images need a separate step.

Convert a DOCX file

A simple DOCX to Obsidian workflow

  1. Convert a copy of your DOCX

Choose the document in the converter on the home page. The tool accepts .docx files up to 20 MB and does not upload them.

  2. Review headings, lists and tables

Open Preview, check the heading outline and inspect any table warnings. Markdown does not represent merged table cells exactly.

  3. Save the Markdown in your vault

Download the .md file, then move it into the folder where you keep notes. Open it in Obsidian and confirm the links and formatting.

02

Handle embedded images separately

The converter leaves a readable placeholder where an embedded image appears; it does not extract image files. Keep the original DOCX as your source while you move the text.

  • Make a copy of the DOCX and rename the copy with a .zip extension.
  • Extract the copy and look in word/media for image files.
  • Place the images beside your Markdown note or in an assets folder, then add an Obsidian embed such as ![[diagram.png]] or a standard Markdown image link.
03

What to review before importing

  • Check that Heading 1 through Heading 6 appear at the intended outline levels.
  • Confirm nested list indentation and numbering.
  • Review table headers and any merged cells.
  • Check external links and replace references that should become Obsidian internal links.
